Let the contract negotiations begin.
On Saturday night, Cris Cyborg got back in the win column, taking a unanimous decision over Felicia Spencer at UFC 240. It was an important fight for Cyborg as it was the final one on her current UFC contract. Now, heading into a contract negotiation with the UFC, Cyborg has some bargaining power as the UFC wants to put together a rematch with Amanda Nunes, but UFC President Dana White isn’t sure that will happen.
“That’s up to Cris,” White told Brett Okamoto of ESPN after UFC 240, when discussing if Nunes vs. Cyborg 2 was next. “Amanda Nunes was blowing me up all night. She was like ‘Get her to take this fight. Get her to take this fight.’ I know every time I speak, Cyborg thinks I’m speaking negatively about her, which I’m not. I’m just speaking facts.
“After watching her fight tonight and after her last fight, I don’t blame her for not wanting to fight Amanda Nunes. If that was Amanda Nunes in there tonight, you know . . .”
This is a continuation of what has been one of the most contentious weeks in Cyborg and White’s history, which is filled with contentious stretches. The short version of the story is that instead of promoting her fight, White has been throwing Cyborg under the bus publicly, saying Cyborg doesn’t actually want a rematch with Nunes. Cyborg has refuted those statements and has suggested that her future may reside elsewhere since, you know, working for a boss that actively undermines you is probably not the greatest. White, for his part, contends that the real issue is that Cyborg wants a softer schedule.
“Cyborg has been around for a long time,” White said. “In my honest opinion, Cyborg sees herself in the twilight of her career, and I think she would like some easier fights. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Many fighters have left to move on to easier fights and there’s nothing wrong with that.
“When you get to a certain age and a certain point of her career and you look like Cris tonight, if that was Amanda Nunes, it’s a whole different ballgame. I don’t blame her for that, I’m not criticizing her for that, but these are facts. And the fact is, I will make the fight if she wants to fight Amanda, and Amanda wants that fight.”
In her UFC 240 post-fight press conference, Cyborg was candid about being unsure of her UFC future, saying that Dana White “bullying” her and a “liar” who is damaging her brand. That being said, Cyborg also donned a “Cyborg vs. Nunes 2, Coming Jan 2020” shirt after her victory and maintains that she would like to stay in the UFC if she and White can come to a point of mutual respect. Upon hearing this at his own post-fight presser, White pumped his fist and seemed confident that things would be resolved in due time.
“I love it,” White said. “That’s the fight to make. That’s the fight I want to make so we’ll see what we can do. If that’s true. If that’s the fight she wants and she really wants that fight. I don’t see how we don’t make a deal.”
And if not. If Cyborg decided to move onto greener pastures, the rest of the UFC female featherweights don’t need to worry. White told Okamoto that regardless of what plays out with Cyborg, the women’s 145 pound division is here to stay.
“The baddest woman on the planet is the champion at 145 pounds,” White said. “The best woman ever to fight holds the ‘35 and ‘45 pound [belts]. You know what’s gonna happen to it? It’s gonna get defended by the baddest chick in the world, that’s what’s gonna happen to it. Amanda wants to stay busy. Amanda wants to fight. Amanda’s the woman to do it.”
