American Caeleb Dressel passes Michael Phelps with dominant world championships performance - USA TODAY

Other than the Olympics, the world championships is swimming's biggest meet. And Caeleb Dressel was sure to make a statement one year out from the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old American took home a record eight medals, surpassing Michael Phelps' previous mark of seven, with a slew of impressive performances in Gwangju, South Korea. He had tied that number two years ago at the world championships in Hungary.

"Part of me is very happy," Dressel said. "Part of me wants to cry that I'm done with it. I've got pimples on my face from just the stress of the meet. I'm probably losing some hair.

"It was a very tough week. I knew I was going to have to come with fire, passion and pride in every single race."

Dressel swam his way to six golds, including three in one night (for the second time in his career), and helped the American 4x100 medley relay take silver on Sunday. He turned in a 49.28-second butterfly split to help take the U.S. from fourth to first, before Nathan Adrian gave up the lead over Great Britain.

The Florida native was named the male swimmer of the meet by dominating the shorter-distance swims. He won the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 50 and 100 butterfly. He was also a part of two relays, the mixed 4x100 free and the 4x100 free, that placed first. Dressel's other silver was in the mixed 4x100 medley relay.
