EDMONTON, Alberta — The UFC has a contingency plan for Saturday’s main event.
Top contender Alexander Volkanovski weighed in on Friday as a potential replacement for the UFC 240 Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar featherweight championship main event Saturday at Rogers Place, per vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner.
He hit 144.5 pounds to make championship weight if he is needed.
Volkanovski (20-1) is unbeaten in seven UFC appearances, most recently defeating two-time UFC champion Jose Aldo via unanimous decision in May.
Neither Holloway nor Edgar have ever missed weight for a UFC bout. Holloway was pulled from a lightweight championship bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov last April, but that was due to the fact that he accepted the fight on less than one week’s notice as a replacement for an injured Tony Ferguson and the New York State Athletic Commission ruled that he would not be able to make the 155-pound limit on such short notice.
It is not yet known what Volkanovski’s compensation will be for making weight should the originally scheduled UFC 240 main event proceed as planned.
