With elbow 'barking,' Mets' Jacob deGrom sent back to New York for MRI - SNY.tv

Mets RHP Jacob deGrom has been sent back to New York because his elbow has been "barking," manager Mickey Callaway said before Friday's game.

"DeGrom is going to be pushed back tomorrow, he's not gonna pitch," Callaway said. "He's been under the weather, his elbow is a little barky. We're gonna get him back to New York. Get him checked out, have an MRI, and go from there at this point."

DeGrom had initially been pushed back from Friday to Saturday due to strep throat. As far as the elbow issue, Callaway said he first started feeling it Friday.

"He played catch yesterday, he came in on the off-day -- he played a little catch and started feeling it a little bit. We're not sure exactly what it is, so we're gonna get it checked out."

When asked if the elbow discomfort could be the reason deGrom has struggled over his last two starts, Callaway said "I don't think so. He hadn't really felt it until yesterday" and added that it's too early to say whether deGrom will need a stint on the IL.

Shortly after the news broke, SNY's Andy Martino said the Mets "don't have a high level of concern" regarding deGrom.

Mets pitching coach Dave Eiland said the team is being "uber cautious" with deGrom and that he might have pitched through the discomfort if it was later in the season, according to Matt Ehalt of NorthJersey.com.

With deGrom out, Saturday's starter is to be determined. Noah Syndergaard will start on Sunday, with Steven Matz starting Monday.

Last season, deGrom -- who had a physical late last month after agreeing to his contract extension -- went for an MRI after injuring his elbow while swinging the bat. The MRI came back clean and he missed one start before returning.

Even before the deGrom news, the Mets had been set to scout Gio Gonzalez on Friday night and have remained in touch with free agent Dallas Keuchel.

DeGrom has had Tommy John surgery in the past, undergoing the procedure in 2010.
