Teddy Bridgewater replacing Cam Newton as Panthers quarterback - AL.com

On Tuesday morning, Carolina announced it had given quarterback Cam Newton permission to seek a trade. By Tuesday evening, the Panthers had a deal with his replacement.

Carolina will sign unrestricted free agent Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 million contract when the NFL’s 2020 business year starts at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, ESPN reported.

Bridgewater spent the past two seasons with the New Orleans Saints as the backup to Drew Brees. Bridgewater made five starts during the 2019 season when Brees was injured, and the Saints won all five games.

Bridgewater entered the NFL as a first-round draft choice from Louisville in 2014. In his first two seasons, he started for the Minnesota Vikings and earned a Pro Bowl invitation in 2015.

But at practice on Aug. 30, 2016, Bridgewater suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and dislocated kneecap. He missed the 2016 season and played in one game in 2017.

Newton has been the Carolina quarterback since the Panthers selected him from Auburn with the first choice in the 2011 NFL Draft. The 2015 NFL MVP, Newton played in two games in 2019 because of a foot injury.

With Newton out, Carolina used Kyle Allen and Will Grier at quarterback.

The Panthers won Allen’s first four starts, then had only one more victory in his next eight. Grier started the final two games of 2019, both losses as the Panthers posted a 5-11 record.

Entering 2019 with two NFL appearances, Allen completed 303-of-489 passes for 3,322 yards with 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. A rookie, Grier completed 28-of-52 passes for 228 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.

Bridgewater completed 133-of-196 passes for 1,384 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions for the Saints in 2019.
