The Yankees passed on signing Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, and never got the chance to lure Nolan Arenado to the Bronx. They're also not going to have a chance to pitch the best player in baseball on the idea of putting on the Pinstripes.
Mike Trout, who had been due to hit the free agent market after the 2020 season, has agreed to a 12-year deal worth $430 million to remain with the Angels, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN.
The new deal absorbs the two years that were remaining on Trout's existing deal, reports USA Today's Bob Nightengale, technically making it a $363.5 million extension that begins in 2021. The deal includes a full no-trade clause and does not contain any opt-outs.
His contract averages out to $35.83 million, and eclipses Harper's as the biggest in the history of North American sports.
The 27-year-old Trout hit .312/.460/.628 with 39 homers last season for the Angels. It was the seventh-straight season where he finished in the Top-4 in MVP voting.
When it comes to salary obligations in 2020 and beyond, the Yankees are in pretty solid shape, with $159.6 million committed in 2020 and just $94.7 million committed in 2021. In other words, they could've given all of their arbitration-eligible players raises while still having room to sign Trout and remain under the Luxury Tax threshold.
With Trout no longer an option, if the Yankees want to add another big-ticket player soon, they can cast their eyes toward this offseason, when Xander Bogaerts, Anthony Rendon, and Chris Sale are among those set to hit the open market.
