The Early Signing Period is here.
National Signing Day is no longer the biggest recruiting day on the recruiting calendar. Now, it’s the first Wednesday of the Early Signing Period. Sixty-five percent of prospects inked early in the 2018 cycle. That number jumped to 77 percent last year in Year 2 of the recruiting shift. A similar number of prospects are expected to ink from Dec. 18 to 20 this year. That means hundreds of commitments and more than a few surprises over the next few days.
To help you keep up with the latest four- and five-star pledges, 247Sports has put together a live commitment tracker that will run throughout the period.
Note: All times listed below are CT
Kendall Dennis Lands At Oklahoma (12:14)
Four-star cornerback Kendall Dennis committed to Oklahoma on Wednesday. The 6-foot-, 174-pound Florida native picked the Sooners over Florida State, Tennessee and Nebraska. Dennis ranks as the No. 235 overall prospect in the 2020 Top247. Dennis, like his high school teammate Smith, is one of the fastest defensive prospects in the class, posting a verified 4.4-second 40-yard dash. Here's 247Sports' eval of Dennis:
"Possesses adequate height and a relatively lean frame. Has plenty of room to redefine his body and add muscle mass once in a strength program. Tests as a good athlete with some variance on his 40 times, but is well above average in that department at the minimum. Posted a strong senior season with a high interception and pass defended rate. Has advanced ball skills with the ability to make leaping interceptions in traffic. Showcases his playmaking ability on both interception and punt returns, flashing quick feet, play speed and vision in the open field. Plays well in aggressive man coverage with the ability to use his short area quickness to stay with receivers off the line. Projects as a Power Five starter with the upside of developing into a NFL Draft pick."
Arian Smith Picks Georgia (12:07)
One of the fastest players in the country, Top247 wide receiver Arian Smith, will sign with Georgia. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound receiver runs a 10.39 in the 100-meter dash and is a national competitor in the 200-meter race. Smith will serve in a role similar to what Mecole Hardman had in Athens. Here's what 247Sports' scouting experts think of Smith, who ranks as the No. 72 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite.
"Possesses a lean sprinter’s build with long arms and big hands. Is currently more developed in his lower body and has room to add substantial muscle mass once he gets in a Power 5 strength program. Is one of the more dynamic athletes in the 2020 cycle as a state champion and runner up in the 200 meter and 100 meter sprints, respectively. Also sports an elite long jump mark. Stars in all three phases for his high school team. Transfers his track speed over to the field with excellent stride length, acceleration and near-perfect running form giving him the ability to pull away from defenses with ease. Is a dangerous threat to score on any touch whether it be as a receiver, rusher or in the return game. Also plays defensive back and could project as a corner at the next level. Shows nice closing speed along with physicality on defense to go with strong ball skills on that side of the ball. Doesn’t play the strongest competition and would benefit from position-specific coaching as he’s a bit raw from a technical standpoint. Should see rapid improvement early in his college career once he focuses on one position. With that said, Smith’s immense physical tools make him one of the 2020 cycle’s more intriguing and high-upside prospects. Projects as a multi-year starter with all-conference and all-American potential and the upside of developing into an early round NFL Draft pick."
Smith picked Georgia over Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma.
Tyler Baron Stays Home At Tennessee (11:44 a.m.)
Four-star defensive end Tyler Baron picked Tennessee over Kentucky, Ohio State and Oklahoma. Baron, a Knoxville native, is the son of Patrick Abernathy, who happens to work for the Vols' football staff. The 6-foot-4, 252-pounder ranks as the No. 112 overall prospect and the No. 5 strong-side defensive end, per the 247Sports Composite. The Vols' class is rising quickly in the 2020 class rankings, jumping to No. 18 overall.
QB CJ Stroud Lands At Ohio State (11:39 a.m.)
The top available quarterback on the open market, CJ Stroud, picked Ohio State on Wednesday. Stroud has been one of the fastest-rising quarterbacks in the 2020 class, jumping from No. 820 overall in February to the No. 83 spot in the 247Sports Composite for the 2020 cycle. Ohio State beat out Georgia and Michigan for the four-star signal caller. Stroud comes to Columbus from California. He's one of two quarterback takes in this cycle for the Buckeyes, joining four-star passer Jack Miller. Stroud is a candidate to continue rising up the rankings. Here's 247Sports' evaluation of Stroud:
"Stroud has a solid frame and will have no problem packing on good weight and filling out when he gets to college. He has one of the strongest arms in the country, a smooth, tight release and shows the athleticism to make plays outside the pocket. He throws the deep ball with touch and accuracy, plays with poise and calmness in the pocket and is only scratching the surface of how good he can be. He’s a late bloomer, and his junior year was his first as a starting varsity quarterback. He’s a two-sport athlete and is a talented basketball player. Once he can focus on just football in college, his game should take off to another level. Projects as an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future mid-to-high round NFL draft pick."
Phillip Webb Commits To LSU (11:10 a.m.)
Four-star linebacker Phillip Webb committed to LSU on Wednesday morning. Webb picked the Tigers over Alabama and Florida. The Georgia native was one of LSU's top remaining targets. He helps the Tigers' push toward No. 1 as they jockey with Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State. Webb ranks as the No. 42 overall prospect and No. 4 outside linebacker in the 247Sports Composite. He'll be an edge rusher in LSU's 3-4 scheme. Check out 247Sports' scouting report of Webb:
“Long athlete that is still relatively underdeveloped physically and has growth potential. Plays in a stand-up pass-rush role where he screams off the edge in high school. Shows outstanding game speed. Closes quickly in the backfield. Can change direction in space effectively. More physical than you think and strong enough to disregard chip blocks and running back one-on-one pass-rush situations. Has some instincts to bat down passes. Doesn’t show a lot of versatility on tape. Needs to add weight and show he can do more than sprint off the edge. Impact power five starter with potential to develop into a mid to early round NFL Draft pick.”
Updating The 2020 Class Rankings (11:05 a.m.)
There have been a few shockers in the first few hours of the Early Signing Period. Take a look at how those moves have impacted the top 10 of the 2020 class rankings.
1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. Ohio State
4. LSU
5. Texas A&M
6. Georgia
7. Auburn
8. Florida
9. Oklahoma
10. Texas
Emmitt Smith's Son Picks Stanford (10:57 a.m.)
EJ Smith, the son of Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, committed to Stanford on Wednesday. Smith is one of the more versatile running backs in the 2020 class at 5-foot-11, 195 pounds. He ran for 905 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior in addition to 34 catches for 513 yards and seven touchdowns. Smith ranks as the No. 144 overall player and No. 3 all-purpose back, per the 247Sports Composite. The Cardinal's 2020 haul jumped into the top 20 with Smith's commitment.
Nebraska Lands Another Elite WR (10:51 a.m.)
The Huskers' strong Early Signing Period push continued Wednesday morning by adding prep school standout Alante Brown. The Chicago native originally signed with Texas Tech out of high school. But instead he spent the 2019 season at St. Thomas More Prep. Brown ranks as a four-star prospect and the No. 1 overall prep prospect in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Brown picked Nebraska over Michigan State and Indiana. Here's a quick eval on what the Huskers will get:
"He is not a kid that stands out from the pack with physical size. Got a little bit taller as a senior and filled out more, but size is not one of his assets. Speed and playmaking ability both are though. As a high school quarterback, he showed tremendous elusiveness, acceleration and breakaway speed. He was in command of games and played his best against top competition. Has a way of finding small creases and accelerating through them. Can make cuts at full speed. Despite not playing wide receiver at his high school, he excelled when asked to do it at camps and 7-on-7 events. He made tough catches, clutch catches, and was able to create separation with his speed and quickness. In college, he will need to get stronger, and he will have to polish those positional skills, but he is further along at the position than was expected from someone who was exclusively a quarterback. He projects as a player who can move around an offensive formation, be given the ball in a variety of ways, and help as a return man as well. Should be a contributor before his career is finished."
Brown joins Omar Manning, Marcus Fleming and Zavier Betts to form one of the top WR classes in the country.
Maryland Flips Five-Star WR Rakim Jarrett From LSU (10:46 a.m.)
Mike Locksley earned the biggest win of his early tenure, flipping Washington D.C. native Rakim Jarrett from LSU. Jarrett, a five-star prospect, had been committed to the Tigers since April. Maryland never stopped recruiting Jarrett, however, and it got the DMV local to stay home. Jarrett ranks as the No. 20 overall prospect and the No. 2 wide receiver in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Here's what 247Sports' scouting experts think of Jarrett:
"Good frame and added upper-body strength and size after junor season. Has slot ability and can play wide. Outstanding body control. Accelerates well out of breaks. Knows how to set up a route. Soft, strong hands. Physical on contested throws. Elite speed and stop-start ability. Tough to re-route on jams. Plays composed. Tracks ball well. Has speed to out-run secondary. Has big-play ability. Needs to improve route running at top of route. Becoming more elusive in tight spaces is important. Blocking technique needs work. Immediate contributor at elite college program. Day 2 NFL draft prospect."
Four-Star S Bud Clark Picks TCU (10:37 a.m.)
After a rough start to the Early Signing Period, TCU picked up a bit of momentum with the commitment of four-star safety Bud Clark. The Louisiana native originally committed to Virginia this cycle, but he opted to stay closer to home. Clark is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound rangy safety who gives the Horned Frogs five four-star prospects this cycle. TCU suffered a pair of decommitments earlier in the day when Jimmy Holiday (Tennessee) and Danny Gray (SMU) flipped.
Nebraska Lands Marcus Fleming (10:31 a.m.)
The Huskers' strong day in the Sunshine State continued with a commitment from four-star wide receiver Marcus Fleming. Nebraska landed the Miami native over Florida State, Georgia, Maryland and many others. Fleming ranks as the No. 134 player and No. 23 wide receiver in the 2020 Top247. The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder is a speedster, posting a sub-4.5-second 40-yard dash at a The Opening Regional earlier this year. Fleming is the second Nebraska commit of the day to come from South Florida, joining Jaiden Francois. Here's a quick scouting report on Fleming, who joins what is currently the nation's No. 18 overall class:
"Shorter, slender build. Should top out somewhere in the 180’s once he gets in a Power 5 strength and conditioning program. Possesses high-level quickness and play speed, making him one of the better deep threats in the 2020 cycle. Has an outstanding burst off the line and takes the top off opposing defenses- many of which have top athletes in the secondary. Isn’t going to win many jump balls but has good downfield tracking ability. Is best as a pure deep threat at this point, but is also dangerous in the quick game after the catch. Has shown some nuance in his routes in camp settings and can win in tight quarters in addition to his natural ability on vertical routes. Good hands on slants in the redzone. Will need to continue improving in getting off of press coverage to ensure he plays on the outside at the next level. Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power 5 level with the upside of developing into one of the more dangerous deep threats in the conference and nationally along with the potential of being an early round NFL Draft pick."
Marcus Dumervil Picks LSU (10:07 a.m.)
Four-star offensive tackle Marcus Dumervil committed to LSU on Wednesday morning. Dumervil picked the Tigers over Louisville, Florida, Alabama and many others. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Dumervil was a long-time LSU lean. Dumervil is the nephew of former NFL pass rusher Elvis Dumervil. This is a big pickup for the Tigers in their attempted march toward the No. 1 ranking in the 2020 cycle. Dumervil ranks as the No. 97 overall prospect and No. 11 offensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite. Here's a quick scouting report on what Dumervil brings to the table:
"Tall, fairly lean build for a 300-pound prospect. Long arms. Balanced blocker with great body control and awareness in pass and run situations. Patient as pass protector with good punch, footwork and overall technique. Strong anchor and ability to redirect underneath. Some edge through the whistle but more finesse and calculated than most at this stage. Mature prospect who takes calculated risks on the outside. Comfortable in short and deep sets alike. Left and right tackle experience. Consistent producer with adequate run-blocking prowess at first or second level. Efficient enough in space but could work to add explosion in time. Scheme versatile. High floor type of prospect who could see near immediate playing time at collegiate level. Added strength and mass will come sooner rather than later. True tackle qualities Day 1 in college coming out of perennial national high school power St. Thomas Aquinas, where he also played on the defensive line. Should develop into a mid-round NFL draft choice."
Josh Griffis Flips, Flips Again (9:53 a.m.)
Three-star defensive end Josh Griffis flipped from Florida State to Louisville 10 days ago. He flipped again on Wednesday, this time back to the Seminoles. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound IMG product ranks as the No. 558 overall recruit in the 2020 247Sports Composite. Florida State's 2020 class currently sits at No. 26 overall. By the way, this is actually Griffis third decommitment. He originally pledged to Florida early on in the 2020 cycle. Nothing like going Florida to Florida State to Louisville to Florida State for a path to signing day.
Tuli Tuipulotu Commits To USC (9:49 a.m)
Nobody needed momentum during the Early Signing Period more than USC, and it picked up some Wednesday morning when three-star defensive tackle Tuli Tuipulotu committed to the Trojans. Tuipulotu committed to USC over overtures from Cal, Nebraska, Stanford and UCLA among many others. The 6-foot-3, 266-pound defender ranks as the No. 378 overall player in the Top247. The Trojans entered the day at No. 84 overall in the 2020 class rankings.
Kentucky Inks Four-Star DT Josaih Hayes (9:38 a.m.)
Kentucky landed a surprise commitment on Wednesday morning from four-star Mississippi defensive tackle Josaih Hayes. The 6-foot-2, 308-pound defender had been committed to Ole Miss for much of his recruitment before opening things up in October. Still, the Rebels looked to have the inside track in Hayes' recruitment after they received the final official visit over the weekend. In the end, however, the Wildcats were able to win out and add to what is currently a Top 25 class. Kentucky hasn't signed a Top 25 class in its history. Hayes ranks as the No. 217 overall player in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite.
Arizona State Flips Johnny Wilson From Oregon (9:30 a.m.)
Arizona State got true freshman quarterback Jayden Daniels some major help on the outside, flipping jumbo athlete Johnny Wilson from Oregon. The California native ranks as the No. 89 overall player in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Wilson had been committed to the Ducks since July, but the Sun Devils made a hard push down the stretch to flip the four-star wide receiver. The 6-foot-6, 224-pound receiver is a massive target and might have a future at tight end down the line. Here's what you need to know about Wilson via 247Sports' scouting report:
"Wilson is one of the biggest receivers in the nation at 6-foot-66, 220 pounds. There is some talk that he could bulk up in to a tight end in college. but he has a receiver skill set and runs well enough to stay at receiver. He’s a natural pass catcher who uses his size to box out smaller defensive backs and is close to impossible to stop in jump-ball and red-zone situations. His speed is deceptive, he has a better get-off then given credit for and has enough top-end speed to get behind a defense and make plays down the field. He’s an advanced and smooth route runner as well, and does a nice job setting up a corner and creating separation. He’s not super shifty with the ball in his hands and won’t make a ton of players miss after the catch, but because of his size and strength he will be able to get plenty of yards after contact. He should develop into a very reliable possession-type receiver and a go-to-guy on key third downs. Has enough speed to make plays in the deep passing game as well. Projects as an impact, upper-tier Power 5 starter and future high-round NFL draft pick."
Jaiden Francois Picks Nebraska (9:21 a.m.)
Jaiden Francois ended one of the more dramatic recruitments of the 2020 cycle, picking Nebraska on Wednesday. The Miami native committed to the Hurricanes in July of 2018 before decommitting from the Hurricanes that December. He then committed to Miami once again this February before decommitting from Miami once again in October. Francois eventually took official visits to Miami and Nebraska before eventually inking with the Huskers. Keep in mind, Francois hails from Dade County, which calls the Hurricanes home. Francois ranks as the No. 283 overall prospect and the No. 28 safety in the 2020 class.

Desmond Tisdol Picks Auburn (9:05 a.m.)
Four-star linebacker Desmond Tisdol committed to Auburn on Wednesday morning, live on CBS Sports HQ. Tisdol's commitment helps Auburn jump to No. 8 in the 2020 class rankings. The 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker is a very traditional undersized athletic linebacker for the Tigers, who prioritizes speed and side-to-side ability in their linebacker room. Tisdol ranks as the No. 135 overall prospect in the 2020 Top247. Check out a quick scouting report on Tisdol here:
"Lacks ideal height, length and mass but possesses a thick lower body and a build that indicates the ability to add weight naturally over his college career. Background at running back has cultivated quick, light feet that allows him to avoid trash. Plays balanced with his feet under him and lives on a healthy border between controlled and aggressive. Accelerates to the football and eats up grass quickly. Shows great hip flexibility evidenced by effortless scoop-and-score ability. Appears to be very instinctive and plays the game with obvious energy. Though he shows a physical nature, more of a wrap and roll tackler than a striker. Not necessarily an imposing enforcer but makes a unmistakable impact. Impact Power Five starter that may need a year to add size but possesses mid to early round NFL Draft upside based on playmaking ability and versatility."
Four-star QB Commits To Georgia Tech (8:57 a.m.)
Four-star quarterback Jeff Sims signed with Georgia Tech on Wednesday. This is a massive get for the Yellowjackets and first-year head coach Geoff Collins. The Yellowjackets hadn't signed a four-star quarterback since 2007, the year before the option-focused Paul Johnson took over in Atlanta. Sims ranks as the No. 206 overall player and the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Sims was committed to Florida State for much of the cycle, but he decommitted from the Seminoles last week. The Yellowjackets' 2020 class ranks 24th in the team rankings after slotting 50th a season ago.
Florida State Lands WR Kentron Poitier (8:35 a.m.)
After weeks of attrition Florida State's 2020 class picked up a new member on Wednesday when three-star wide receiver Kentron Poitier inked with the Seminoles. The Miami native ranks as the No. 386 overall player in the 2020 Top247. Poitier finished his senior season with 36 catches for 507 yards and 10 touchdowns. He picked Florida State after taking official visits to both Florida and Florida State.
Tennessee Flips TCU Athlete (8:28 a.m.)
It hasn't been the best morning for TCU thus far. Minutes after Gray flipped from the Horned Frogs to the Mustangs, Tennessee snagged three-star TCU athlete Jimmy Holiday for its 2020 class. Holiday ranks as the No. 789 overall prospect and No. 46 athlete in the 2020 class.
“I just felt like I had a better chance to develop myself on a bigger stage," Holiday told GoVols247.
Holiday is the second commitment of the day for Tennessee, joining four-star linebacker Len'Neth Whitehead.
SMU Flips TCU WR Commit (8:21 a.m.)
SMU is making moves during the Early Signing Period. Minutes after landing three-star receiver Thad Johnson, who had numerous Power Five offers, the Mustangs flipped TCU wide receiver commit Danny Gray. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wideout had been committed to the Horned Frogs since June. Gray ranks as the No. 15 overall JUCO prospect in the country. He initially signed with Missouri as a three-star prospect in the 2018 class.
"I love the fact of how close the coaches are and how they treat players. I saw a lot of progression in the offense over my time of being there. I like how they have a plan to maximize my talents," Gray told Pony Stampede. "SMU made a big jump in my recruitment because they didn’t sell a dream or show me any flashy things. I love how coach Dykes coach he’s an Air Raid coach who loves to throw the pill around. What I love about SMU is that they made my family feel at home and that was a big part."
Jeremiah Pegues Commits To Auburn (8:16 a.m.)
Auburn landed four-star tight end Jeremiah Pegues on Wednesday morning. The 6-feet-3, 285-pounder ranks as the No. 247 overall player in the 2020 247Sports Composite. Pegues picked the Tigers over overtures from Alabama and Ole Miss. In the end, Pegues' relationship with tight ends coach Larry Porter made the difference.
"Just because everybody always talks about how good they are, not just the football team, but how great it is to be there at Auburn,” Pegues said. “Just knowing that Porter coached my dad (at Arkansas State) and I know that he liked him.
Auburn's 2020 class currently ranks ninth nationally.
Tennessee Lands Len'Neth Whitehead (8:05 a.m.)
Tennessee started off what could be a big day with a commitment from four-star linebacker Len'Neth Whitehead. The Georgia native picked the Vols over South Carolina and UCLA. Whitehead ranks as the No. 88 player in the 2020 Top247, adding to a Tennessee class that has a chance to rocket up the rankings from No. 20 during the Early Signing Period. Here's a quick scouting report on Whitehead:
"Thick, densely-built athlete with a powerful base and the potential to add significant weight on the next level. Possesses natural power and explosive strength evidenced by one of the top shot put numbers in the nation. Natural, instinctive feet. Plays significantly on both sides of the ball with a primary position as running back. Displays impressive toughness and effort. Blue collar demeanor. Strong enough to set the edge or take on blocks in the middle. Verified speed but doesn’t show much suddenness on film. Deceptive athlete. Too often relies on throwing down ball-carriers in high school. Doesn’t show the pop at contact you’d expect. Impact power five prospect with early round NFL Draft upside with the right development."
Four-Star LB Picks Wisconsin (7:57 a.m.)
Four-star linebacker Kaden Johnson signed with Wisconsin on Wednesday. The Badgers held off LSU, Tennessee, Nebraska and many others for the Minnesota native. Johnson ranks as the No. 162 overall player in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite. He's the third four-star prospect Wisconsin's signed this cycle. The Badgers started the day on the fringe of a Top 25 class at No. 28 overall.
"My parents told me going in that the decision was up to me," Johnson told Badger247. "When it came time for me to talk, I was like 'Let's do it.' Wisconsin loves me and I love them."
Clemson Flips LSU Commit Malcolm Green (7:17 a.m.)
Clemson flipped four-star safety Malcolm Green from LSU on Wednesday morning. The Virginia native ranks as the No. 24 safety and No. 253 defensive back in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Green, the Tigers' fourth defensive back take of the cycle, projects to play nickel at Clemson. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder originally committed to LSU in October. This flip helps Clemson stave off stiff competition from LSU for the No. 1 spot. The Tigers of Clemson continue to sit at No. 1, but LSU has a chance to make a move later today.
Purdue Enters Top 25 (7:13 a.m.)
Purdue continued its strong run of recruiting Wednesday, flipping three-star receiver Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen from Northwestern. Yaseen, the No. 372 overall prospect in the 2020 class, picked Purdue following a weekend official visit. "It felt like it was a good fit in all aspects," Yaseen told 247Sports. The Boilermakers' ESP flip pushed them into the Top 25 of the 247Sports Team rankings. If Purdue's ranking holds through February, it'll be the first time in program history the Boilermakers have posted back-to-back Top 25 classes.
Jah Joyner Picks Minnesota (6:46 a.m.)
The four-star movement started early Wednesday morning when Minnesota picked up a commitment from four-star defensive end Jah Joyner. Joyner had been a long-time Boston College commit, but he flipped to the Gophers at the start of the Early Signing Period. Joyner ranks as the No. 279 overall player in the Top247.
“I’m going to Minnesota,” Joyner said. “I love the people and culture and really believe in coach (P.J.) Fleck. I believe in his vision for me moving forward and I believe in their academic staff as well. I believe that he’s going to change my life not only on the field, but off the field.”
