Yankees reliever David Hale put on IL due to back strain - New York Post

In addition to putting Luke Voit on the 10-day IL with a sports hernia that may or not need surgery, the Yankees placed right-handed reliever David Hale (back) on the IL.

Righty reliever Jonathan Holder was recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with infielder Breyvic Valera.

Hale was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lumbar spine strain, retroactive to Sunday.

“Hopefully it’s something that’s a short-term thing,’’ Aaron Boone said before the Yankees’ 7-5 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Holder has spent most of the last month with SWB after struggling in The Bronx. He made one appearance with the Yankees since then, tossing a scoreless inning on July 22.

While the Yankees didn’t acquire help to bolster the major league roster, they did get 20-yeaer-old lefty Alfredo Garcia from the Rockies for right-hander Joseph Harvey.

The move was made with the anticipation of healthy players returning to the 40-man roster from the 60-day IL, and with the new rule that prohibits trades after July 31, it changes designating players for assignment.

“It is trying to get ahead of the roster crunch,’’ GM Brian Cashman said. “It could play its way in season in 2019 as well as anticipation as Rule 5 issues in the future.’’

Garcia is 3-10 with a 6.00 ERA in a combined 22 starts for two Single-A teams. Harvey appeared in nine big league games (all relief) for the Yankees this year, going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA.

Didi Gregorius had a tough day in the field and at the plate.

In the fourth inning the shortstop rolled his left wrist going for a ground ball on the first base side of second base that went for a single by Alex Avila. He was checked out and remained in the game. In the eighth inning he fouled a ball off the upper left leg and stayed in the game.

“I think he is OK,’’ Boone said of his shortstop. “He is tough.’’

Third baseman Urshela also remained in the game after banging his knee in the fifth inning, when Aaron Hicks overthrew him at third base.

“As the game went on I thought he was moving really well,’’ Boone said. “Obviously he made a great play in the ninth and he was running well. I think it was something temporary that jarred him.’’
