PHILADELPHIA — On his continued evolution from so-called “system player” to gaming-the-system-player, Kawhi Leonard has taken basketball from a game that has been known to humble the greatest to one in which he does the humbling — of opponents, of pressure situations, of whatever is thrown his way.
In these playoffs, and this series in particular against the Philadelphia 76ers, Leonard has become the player on “NBA Jam” who never heats up because he’s always on fire; he’s mastered the button combo on “Double Dribble” to get a basket on every trip down the floor; and he’s found the cheat codes on “NBA2K” to increase his player rating to 99. Video game analogies work best, because that’s the only way to make sense of someone who has manipulated the real life glitches on the basketball court. He’s Wreck-it-Kawhi.
