It was only one pass in seven-on-seven during Friday’s rookie minicamp practice, but Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones showed that he checked a box that at least at this stage of his career, Eli Manning’s limitations have kept him from checking in recent seasons.
Jones rolled to his left, showed outstanding body control throwing across his body and hitting wide receiver Alex Wesley in stride.
In a system that values functional mobility and had its most success last season when Manning rolled out of the pocket, Jones seems poised to throw the playbook wide open once he gets his opportunity.
“You got to have all the traits,” Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said prior to Saturday’s rookie minicamp practice. “You’ve got to be able to do all the things that quarterbacks need to do, but when you find a guy that is mobile, that’s really special.”
Jones won’t be confused with Michael Vick or Cam Newton as runners. However, he posted a 4.81 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and was unofficially timed at 4.67 at the friendly confines of Duke’s pro day.
His mobility and acumen from the pocket put Jones on the Giants’ radar before he was the No. 6 overall pick in last weekend’s NFL Draft.
“You have to be a great decision maker," Shurmur said. "It’s primary for quarterbacks. You have to have a sense of timing ... The rush is on me, I’ve got to do something, or I have to get the ball out right now.
"You have to be an accurate passer. I really believe, you have to have an element of mobility. You have to be able to move. Whether you’re moving around in the pocket or have to scramble, you have to be able to move. He can do that.”
There were some questions about Jones’ arm-strength from scouts and evaluators across the league, but while opening rookie minicamp practices must be taken with a large grain of salt, Friday’s session gave Jones a chance to flash his deep-ball accuracy on several occasions.
“You have to have arm-strength, I think you say that yesterday," Shurmur said. “We had many exposures starting with the Senior Bowl, where we were able to throw in person. Watching him on tape, I thought he had a strong enough arm to make all the throws. You’re looking to confirm that when you’re with him in person, and I thought he did.”
