Raptors beat Sixers so bad it broke the Drake curse - SB Nation

It would appear the Raptors not named Kawhi Leonard figured something out on Tuesday, or the Sixers are just in such a bad state that they’ve made Toronto players who haven’t looked good all series look great. Whatever the case, the Raptors laid out the Sixers by 36 on Tuesday to take a 3-2 series lead. The series reconvenes in Philly on Thursday.

Joel Embiid, continuing to fight various ailments, was not terribly effective (eight turnovers!). Ben Simmons was practically invisible, except when he was turning the ball over (five in 25 minutes). James Ennis (really good previously in this series) played 22 minutes and finished with one point, one rebound, one assist, and four fouls. Your boy T.J. McConnell put up an 8 trillion. Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris were OK on offense, but got grilled like everyone else on defense.

Meanwhile, Leonard cooked. Pascal Siakam — apparently all better now — cooked. KYLE LOWRY COOKED. The Raptors did everything you can do to win a game other than grab a bunch of offensive rebounds. The Sixers did nothing you can do to win a game except protect the defensive glass — they didn’t shoot well, defend opponent shots well, protect the ball, create turnovers, draw fouls, avoid fouling the other team, or grab a bunch of offensive rebounds. They actually lost all eight of the Oliverian factors.

Worst of all, they let Drake stunt on them.

Not only is the Drake curse dead, the Drake curse is laughing in Philadelphia’s face right now. This is “Charged Up” all over again. Now we see if the Raptors have a “Back to Back” in them.

The Nuggets invited the Blazers to their woodsheds and chopped ‘em up. (That’s right: two blowouts in one night during what had been a very competitive second round.) Paul Millsap brought it early, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray finished it off in the third quarter. Gary Harris continues to do the job defensively. Things haven’t been great for Portland since winning that 4OT thriller ...

Kevin Arnovitz on Kyle Lowry. Two of the best things about basketball, together at last!

Marc Gasol didn’t really want to be traded but seems happy now. Also, he was boiling a 5-pound octopus when he found out the Raptors traded for him. MARC, GO ON SERGE IBAKA’S COOKING SHOW. (Actually, he and Pau already did. They ate cow heart.)

Get on the Bucks bandwagon if you can find space.

Are the Celtics soft? Kristian Winfield writes the C’s are learning you can’t just turn it on when you want.

Paul George had shoulder surgery and will miss camp. Hmm.

Kevin Durant is averaging 36 points per game against the Rockets. The Splash Brothers are also averaging 36 points per game against the Rockets ... combined.

Pancake triumphalist Matt Ellentuck on P.J. Tucker making role players fashionable.

Harry Lyles makes the case for a premium NBA viewing option focused on ... uh, referees.

Ian Karmel on appreciating the moment.

John Gonzalez sings a song I love so much: we really still have no idea what to make of coaches, even in the playoffs.

Be excellent to each other.
